2029 doesn’t sound like a real year yet. You know how years sometimes sound fake until they arrive? Everything past 2025 is like that. But 2029 should be on your calendar, because that’s when Pixar and Disney will release Coco 2, the sequel to 2017’s extremely popular Coco, which won Oscars for best animated feature and best song (“Remember Me”).
Coco is the story of a tween who goes against his family’s wishes with his love for playing the guitar. On Dia de Muertos, he finds himself in the Land of the Dead, where he learns the truth of his family’s past, and why they’ve banned music. The first film starred the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Alanna Ubach, Renee Victor, Jaime Camil, Edward James Olmos, and many more. Leah Schnelbach called it “a lovely, effervescent film about death.”
Coco 2 will be directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, both returning from the first film. No writer or plot details have been announced, but Disney CEO Bob Iger said at the company shareholder meeting, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure.”
Coco 2 will arrive in theaters in 2029. If that’s a real year.
