Tom King is everywhere right now. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic he wrote. He’s the co-creator of Max’s upcoming Lanterns series. And now another comic series of his is getting adapted: Love Everlasting, co-created with Elsa Charretier, is the story of a woman trapped in an endless series of relationship situations.
Here’s how Deadline, which broke the news, summarizes the story:
It is described as a mix of Groundhog Day and Quantum Leap with sci-fi and horror elements. The protagonist is Joan Peterson, a heroine who begins in the mold of how woman are often portrayed in romance comics: with the major goal to fall in love. Only here, each time she reaches that plateau, Joan finds herself abruptly shifted into a new time period and setting with new obstacles and the task of overcoming them to fall in love with a different man. Finally, she begins to question what she wants out of her life and tries to figure out a way to take control of her own destiny, one that doesn’t necessarily require the love of a man to complete her.
Is this a good time to point out that it sure feels like we’re getting a lot more adaptations of work written by men than women? Yes, the King Factor—the sheer number of Stephen King adaptations—is real, but even a quick glance over recent adaptation news shows a notable imbalance. [ed note: To be fair, this series was co-created by Elsa Charretier, and we certainly don’t want to downplay her work! But we’re pointing out an overall trend that most of the big adaptation news tends to come from the work of male writers—we think it’s worth tracking that in our reporting.]
At any rate, Love Everlasting has a pretty fancy creative team, including Room director Lenny Abrahamson and Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) writing the screenplay. There’s no word yet on casting, or when we’ll see the latest Tom King tale come to life.
