La Geria Lanzarote rug by Jose A Gandía-Blasco Canales for Gan

Dezeen Showroom: Spanish textile brand Gan has released a woollen rug that replicates the unique topography of La Geria – a protected landscape on Lanzarote, where wine is grown in conical pits dug into the volcanic soil.

Designed by Gandia Blasco artistic director José Antonio Gandía-Blasco Canales, the La Geria Lanzarote rug is hand-tufted in India to mimic the depth and texture of the craggy “picón” layer of volcanic rock fragments.

The rug replicates not just the irregular placement of the conical pits but also the young green vines sprouting from their centre, creating a dramatic contrast in colour.

It is available in one round and two rectangular sizes, all of which draw a parallel between viticulture and rugmaking as two traditional crafts that work with natural materials.

“Viticulture in La Geria has been developed in a traditional manner, employing ancestral technique,” Gan said. “Manual labour is fundamental in all stages of its process, from pruning to harvesting.”

“In turn, rugs like those of Gan are born from the earth,” the brand added. “The wool, raw material of this new creation by José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales, is worked with precision and detail by craftsmen using ancestral techniques, passed down from generation to generation, which have been kept alive over time.”
