Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider Series Is Coming to Prime Video

We’ve known for over a year that Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was working on a television series adaption of the popular video game and movie franchise Tomb Raider, and today we got confirmation that Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit the show.

“Phoebe has a lifelong love affair with Lara Croft… and very soon we’ll start the worldwide search for who will play this iconic role and I just can’t wait,” Amazon MGM studios chief Jennifer Salke said from the stage during the studio’s upfronts today in New York City (per Variety).

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement shared by Variety. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Waller-Bridge has shared additional thoughts of what she has in mind for the series in an interview last year: “The opportunity to have, as we were talking earlier, a female action character…. Having worked on Bond and having worked as an actor on Indy, I feel like I’ve been building up to this. What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I’ve learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that ’90s vibe?”

We don’t have any additional details yet about the show, though it looks like the search for the actor to play Lara is about to begin in earnest. No news yet on when the Tomb Raider series will premiere on Prime Video. icon-paragraph-end
