It is a momentous day in the fictional world of Severance, and here in the real world: In Kier, PE, Mark Scout is finishing a meaningful task at work, and we’re out here celebrating the fact that Severance finally got renewed for a third season.
It was always very likely that Severance would return. The show is Apple TV +’s most-watched series, a beautifully designed workplace story full of mysteries, deep personal traumas, really weird food, and fantastically complex characters. Created by Dan Erickson and steadily shepherded along by frequent director and executive producer Ben Stiller, Severance has become the latest smart, funny, affecting series that you absolutely have to discuss after viewing.
Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, who works on the severed floor at Lumon Industries—which means his work self (his innie) and his personal self (his outie) are in essence different people, cut off by the severance technology. He has some wonderful severed colleagues. The work is mysterious and important. Really mysterious. Or, as Apple explains:
In Severance, Mark Scout (Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work … and of himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.
Severance also stars Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, Patricia Arquette, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, and Christopher Walken. Its mysteries will continue on Apple TV+ at an unspecified future date (hopefully not three years from now).
