Robert Eggers has found his next project. His dark and moody Nosferatu has recently hit theaters, and the writer-director is staying in the creature horror space with his next feature.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eggers has co-written a script with Sjón—his writing partner for The Northman—for a film called Werwulf, which he will also direct.
We don’t have many details on the script, but it’s likely to be visceral, moody, and a disturbingly riveting watch. I bet it also involves at least one person who turns into a violent, murderous wolf at certain times of the month. Whether it looks similar to that seen in 1935’s Werewolf of London (pictured above) remains to be seen.
One tidbit we do know is that it takes place in 13th century England and that the script is at least partially written in Old English, because Robert Eggers.
The film will be in color, although the writer-director was initially thinking of shooting it in black-and-white. Again, because Robert Eggers.
Eggers and Sjón are producing, along with Chris and Eleanor Columbus, who also produced Nosferatu. The project is still in its early days, so there’s no news yet on casting or when it will go into production. Focus Features has already given it a release date, however, so mark your calendar for Christmas Day, 2026 if you want some werwulfs speaking in Old English that holiday season.
