Sophie Turner Looks Likely to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Series

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series is close to casting its Lara Croft.

According to Deadline, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner is in negotiations to play the starring role. Turner, of course, is widely known for playing Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones (pictured above). Her other credits include playing Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix and, most recently, the lead in the British limited crime series, Joan.

In a 2023 interview, Waller-Bridge shared her take on Croft, a character previously played by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in film adaptations of the popular video game franchise. “Having worked on Bond and having worked as an actor on Indy, I feel like I’ve been building up to this,” she said. “What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I’ve learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that ’90s vibe?”

The showrunner also added that she was excited by the idea of the show being a “Trojan Horse,” where she could do “something really quite dangerous” and exciting by having a built-in audience of fans who will, she hopes, be pleased and surprised by what she brings to the series. How Turner’s potential portrayal of Lara Croft plays into that remains to be seen, and I’m curious to see her take on the character.

No news yet on when the series will go into production or make its way to Prime Video. I should also note that Turner’s casting still has yet to be officially confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios, most likely because negotiations are ongoing. If those talks go smoothly, however, it’s very likely we’ll see Turner take on the Tomb Raider banner in the near future. icon-paragraph-end
