A24’s The Legend of Ochi looks like a movie that will make many adults cry (in a good way) in no small part because the baby ochi who stars in the film is undeniably adorable.
That ochi is even adorable when you can see the five puppeteers who bring it to life, as you can in the behind-the-scenes video A24 released today. The video also features an interview with writer-director Isaiah Saxon, who not only talks about how the ochi helps a girl understand herself, but also explains that there’s a “slow dial that gets turned up towards fantasy and magic over the course of the film.” I was already sold on this movie, but now I’m double-sold, if that’s even a thing.
Here’s The Legend of Ochi’s logline:
In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as ochi. But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home.
The movie stars Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, Willem Dafoe, and—of course—that adorable, trilling ochi. A24 even has a field guide on the ochi for sale, if you want more ochi-ness before the film premieres in theaters on April 25, 2025.
While we wait, check out the behind-the-scenes clip below.
