The improbable adventures of the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar are—finally—about to continue. The animated series for younger views began on Paramount Plus, like every other Star Trek show, but last year, the streamer decided not to air the second season and to remove the first season from its platform. Fans made their displeasure with this decision known, and Netflix came to the rescue, picking up both seasons of the series. The first season arrived just in time for Christmas, but it wasn’t clear when season two would warp onto the platform, other than “in 2024.”
Well, it’s your time: Star Trek: Prodigy’s second season will arrive on Netflix on July 1st, according to the show’s creators.
It is not entirely clear whether this will be your typical Netflix all-episodes-in-one go release, or if they’ll mix it up and release episodes weekly or in clusters, but TrekCore.com says they confirmed with CBS Studios that all 20 episodes will arrive on July 1st.
As Jim McDermott wrote, Prodigy is a Star Trek show unlike any other, one “that offers children some really powerful ideas about friendship, courage and self-sacrifice. It’s a story about finding yourself and your people in the act of giving yourself away.” It stars Kate Mulgrew as a hologram version of her iconic Captain Janeway; the rest of the outstanding voice cast includes Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner), and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok). Daveed Diggs, Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander, and Robert Beltram show up sometimes, too.
